Domain controller on Dedicated Server (Part I)

May 25th, 2010 by admin under Dedicated Servers. No Comments.

Domain controller is a server on a Microsoft Windows dedicated servers hosting that allows a host to access to Windows domain resources. Active Directory  services are used to create domain controller.  It stores user account information, authenticates users and enforces security policy for  domains on the Windows dedicated servers.

The below mentioned tutorial will help you to create domain on your Windows dedicated server hosting.

Note :- The tutorial is writtern by keeping in mind that you have Windows 2003 operating system on your dedicated server.

Steps :—–

Click start  and then Run.

Then type DCPROM.

Note : DCPROMO command is used to open active directory on Windows dedicated servers.

You will see the Installation wizard. On the installation wizard click “Next”.

Click “Next” on the compatibility window and in the next window keep the default option of “Domain Controller for a new domain” selected.

Again click “Next” and then create “test.testdomain“. (Though you can keep the domain you have for your website on the Windows dedicated hosting, however, this is done to keep the process simple).

Take the first part of the domain into consideration for now and it should be the default selection, as the NetBIOS name of the domain.

Then Active directory installation window will open and you should select Database and Log folders. Once again, I will keep the selection as the same, however, it can be changed if you would like to use the disk space of another Windows dedicated server hosting.

After you are done with this, select Install and configure the DNS server on this computer and set this computer to use this DNS server as it preferred DNS server and then click “Next”.

Permission screen will appear and you should keep the default of “Permissions compatible only with Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 operating systems”.  Again, click “Next” and proceed.
