Security In Dedicated Servers

server securityDedicated servers platform is a complete system of hardware and software and it is a complicated environment where many components coexist and each has its own characteristics in terms of use and performance. The operating system is considered as a critical component on dedicated servers and the client choice is perhaps one of the most important decisions to take. The most important are Linux (RedHat, Debian, etc..), UNIX (FreeBSD, Solaris, etc..) And Windows (2000 Server, 2003 Server).

In many ways Windows and Linux / UNIX operating systems are comparable and even provide similar functionality. One of the important areas of debate among them is security. These systems meet the security specifications of the “Orange Book” of the National Computer Security Department of United States that is considered as the standard for evaluating IT security. The most common classification is C2, a requirement in marketing of products in most of the governmental services.

The differences in protection and security between Linux / UNIX and Windows can be attributed in part to the relative age of each of these operating systems. UNIX takes longer providing network services and therefore gathers more experience in handling safety violations. Windows in turn does not brings together so much experience in this environment. Anyway security flaws continuously appear on both platforms and patches must be applied continuously by their respective makers.
